What Fish Tacos Taught Me About Life

The Travel Sessions: Vol. 11

Hey, August is here. As a kid I tried to absorb everyyy last bit of summer before school started. In that spirit, I hope you’re getting your feet in the grass, swimming in water, sharing meals with people you love, and catching as many sunsets as possible.

Thought Bite

Never forget the automatic ice breaker and friend-maker: food.

From the Road

If you follow me on IG, you might’ve seen that fish taco reel that blew up a few weeks ago. It’s somehow at 3 million views, and I think I get why.

The reel hits on something we’re all craving right now: realness.

Real food made with bare hands, no gloves. Friends eating sauce dripping tacos with sandy fingers and birdsong in the background. Yes, even flies.

We’re all aching for those wholesome moments. And that’s the magic of breaking bread, it’s the oldest icebreaker in the book. Still the best one, imo.

Here in Santa Catalina, we’ve been bringing that same energy to SurfAsana Lodge. This week we had our first semi-full house — I’ve been teaching pre-surf yoga in the mornings, and Maurizio made his pesto shrimp pasta for family dinner night. It's actually so gratifying and I'm sad to see our fav guest, Juan, go back to Spain tomorrow!

Next time you travel, try adding a food tour or cooking class to your itinerary. You might just walk away with a new recipe… and a few new friends.

xo,

Melanie
