When I first left to travel solo, I didn’t speak Spanish. Like… at all. I was the “Dónde está la biblioteca” girl at the bus stop, phone open to Google Translate just praying someone could tell me which bus to get on. Over the last three and a half years, I’ve gotten much better at Spanish (and at asking for directions), but I still think about the biggest thing I learned from that time.
From the Road
Backpacking through Latin America without speaking Spanish reinforced something important: aAlot of communication isn’t verbal.
While volunteering at Casa Marimba in 2022 (I built their website and taught yoga!), I needed a way to bond with the kitchen ladies beyond my super basic small talk. After sharing easy stretches and putting on mini hula hoop shows, we clicked. And by the time I rollled out three months later, we were just girls together.
Not knowing how to say the right thing pushed me to focus on how I made people feel. The language of energy is universal. You are felt the moment you walk into a room. People may forget your words, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.
