The Kind of Magic You Can’t Google
When I set off solo to Latin America, the reaction was... cautious.
People were quick to share headlines instead of encouragement. But something in me said go, so I did. Three years later, I live here full-time, speak Spanish, adopted a puppy, and watch members of my family visit countries they once side-eyed — and fall in love with them, just like I did.
If you let fear — or other people’s opinions (even the media’s) — stop you from doing what you desire… you might miss out on something beautiful and life-changing.
From the Road
Next week, I’m off to Cartagena — Colombia’s sea-kissed colonial city. Why, you ask? (Yes, it does mean another eight-hour bus ride to the airport.) I’m chasing a story on how historic mansions — once home to infamous pirates and eccentric aristocrats — are being reimagined as design-forward wellness retreats. Think centuries-old aqueduct pools, cooking classes in crumbling courtyards, fresco-lined dining rooms, yoga with cathedral views, and spa treatments infused with Andean coffee. Catch me chasing pirates and poolside rituals in Cartagena…
The Current
There’s been a noticeable uptick in U.S. travel advisories for parts of Latin America lately. But these warnings often reflect political climates more than the actual experience of being there as a tourist. Headlines rarely tell the whole story. Solo travel takes situational awareness, yes — but also discernment. My advice? Research with intention. Stay curious. Talk to other travelers (I love this facebook group), and trust yourself. If artsy, eye-popping places are your thing, put Guatapé, Colombia on your list, and read my article on it below!
